Selawik man drowns while swimming in river

A Selawik man drowned while swimming in the Northwest Alaska village Monday night, the Alaska State Troopers said.

Chester Skin, 45, was seen going underwater in the Selawik River at about 7:30 p.m., troopers said in an alert Tuesday.

Selawik is about 90 miles east of Kotzebue.

"Several people that were swimming and boating in the area began looking for Skin who was presumed drowned," troopers said.

Searchers found Skin's body at 10:20 p.m. and brought him to the village clinic. His family was at the scene, troopers said.

Skin was not wearing a life jacket, troopers said.
