Wind gusts to 80 mph in Anchorage-area forecast

Forecasters warned of difficult travel and potential hazards as the National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for Thursday morning in the Anchorage Bowl and along Turnagain Arm.

The warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Turnagain Arm and higher elevations could see winds of 50 to 60 mph with gusts up to 80 mph, the weather service said. Winds in the Anchorage Bowl were expected to reach 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

Winds were expected to rise to warning levels by early morning, then rapidly diminish in early afternoon.

"Travel may be difficult. Trees may be blown over. Loose debris can be moved and damage property," the weather service said.

The weather service urged residents to secure loose items that could be damaged or blown around by wind.
