Dangerous winds forecasted for Anchorage area Friday afternoon

A developing storm is forecast to bring potentially dangerous winds to Anchorage and Turnagain Arm on Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency issued a high wind warning for Friday afternoon and evening, with gusts between 40 to 55 mph in the Anchorage Bowl and 65 to 80 mph on the Hillside. The warning means a “hazardous” wind event is expected.

“Travel may be difficult, especially along Turnagain Arm. Trees may be blown over. Loose objects or debris can be moved and damage property,” the statement warned.

The agency also issued a special weather statement for a broad area from Prince William Sound to the Copper River basin.

The storm is expected to strengthen as it approaches the southern mainland Friday, forecasters say. That will generate gusty southeasterly winds across Portage Valley, Anchorage, the Matanuska Valley and Copper River basin.
