Heat brings high-water warning for Southcentral Alaska rivers

The National Weather Service on Monday warned of high water along the Matanuska, Skwentna, Klutina, Eagle, Sixmile and Talkeetna rivers due to mountain snowmelt amid extended warm weather.

The statement also covers the Kenai River at Cooper Landing, Kenai Keys, and below Skilak Lake.

Elevated water conditions will persist for Eagle River, the advisory says. People trying to cross should be prepared “for very high and swift water.”

The agency warned of rising waters until Friday but also said no “significant impacts” were expected.

High-water erosion on a Talkeetna trail from the end of Main Street to the Talkeetna River prompted the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to close the trail.

A flood warning has also been issued for the Yentna River at Fish Creek.
