Assembly delays vote on limiting executive raises

The Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday evening put off a vote on an ordinance that would limit raises for the city's executives in the same way that a recently passed law championed by Mayor Dan Sullivan holds down union salaries.

The measure, proposed by Assemblyman Dick Traini, will be the subject of an assembly work session on August 2, and then be considered again at a full meeting on August 6.

The Assembly also shot down by a vote of 6 to 5 an ordinance that would have required Assembly approval for any city spending on legal services exceeding $10,000, reducing the current threshold from $30,000.

That ordinance, also proposed by Traini, came after the Sullivan administration spent $29,500 on an attorney to help draft the measure limiting union salaries.

"They voted the way the Mayor told them to," Traini said after the meeting, referring to the six assembly members that opposed the ordinance. "They're wrong."
