Firefighters quickly knocked down flames at an Anchorage mobile home Tuesday after a caller from the nearby Merrill Field airport reported a smoke plume, said the Anchorage Fire Department.
Jared Stiglich, an engineer with the Fire Department, said crews had to peel off boards nailed over the structure's doors and windows to fight the fire that roared inside.
The 911 call came in at 5:21 p.m. and the fire in the Penland Mobile Home Park was under control 10 minutes later, dispatchers said.
"Nobody was hurt," Stiglich said. "Nobody was here."
Stiglich said the tan and white mobile home that abuts Penland Parkway across from the Northway Mall was vacant Tuesday, though clothing and magazines were strewn inside.
"There were signs of people living there," he said. "So it makes it suspicious."
A fire investigator was on scene Tuesday evening to try to determine the fire's cause. Stiglich said the flames heavily damaged the center portion of the mobile home.
