West, Soldotna remain atop ASBN prep football polls

Defending large-school state champion West maintained its top ranking in the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network football poll released Monday, and the Cook Inlet Conference accounted for the top four teams.

West of the CIC remained No. 1 after Friday night's season-opening, nonconference victory over Palmer of the Railbelt Conference, which was ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll.

Following the Eagles are No. 2-ranked South of the CIC, a 20-0 winner Saturday over previously No. 3-ranked Dimond of the CIC; No. 3-ranked Bartlett of the CIC, a 47-14 winner Saturday at Lathrop of the Railbelt; and No. 4-ranked Service of the CIC, a 14-6 winner Saturday over visiting Wasilla of the Railbelt.

Colony of the Railbelt entered the poll at No. 5 following a 23-13 win over East of the CIC.

Of the five ranked large-school teams, only one this week plays an opponent that won its season opener. South faces Chugiak, which won 50-0 at Kodiak, a medium-school team.

Dimond and Palmer both fell out of the poll.

In the medium-small school poll, defending state medium champion Soldotna remained No. 1 after a 53-6 road dismantling of Eagle River.

The Nos. 2-5 teams also stayed the same after season-opening wins. Juneau-Douglas remained No. 2, followed by North Pole, Eielson and Nikiski.
