Rival volleyball players team up to battle cancer

South defeated Service 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-19) in a Cook Inlet Conference volleyball match at Service on a night that saw the rival teams join forces against cancer.

"Between our two teams and the Anchorage community over $9,000 was raised this past month," said Service coach Bryan Stenehjem.

Stenehjem said a check was presented Wednesday to the American Cancer Society. Funds were donated through T-shirt sales by South and Service players and donations from the community.

On the floor, South's Kayla Sims dished out 31 assists, Shelby Little had and Tatum Upchurch each had seven kills and Claere Lacey had six. Aspen Avery added 21 digs for the victors, who also got 18 digs from McKenna Hurd.

Morgan Christy had 12 kills, two aces and four blocks to lead Service, which also got five kills from Paxson Lawther, 20 assists from Megan Christy and 15 digs from Monique Mojica.

Lynx sweep Wolves

Dimond swept Eagle River (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) in a Cook Inlet Conference volleyball match on Wednesday at Dimond.

Allie McDonnell had 16 assists for the Lynx, who got seven kills and five aces from Rohyn Huss, nine digs from Anjoilyn Vreeland and four kills and 11 digs from Chrisalyn Johnson.

Kara Viotto had seven kills to lead Eagle River, which also got six kills from Lindsey Foster and 13 assists from Paige Harder.
