Adapting Alaska Native culture to the video console

With "Never Alone: Kisima Ingitchuna," the first Alaska Native-produced video game out earlier this month, Gloria O'Neill, President and CEO of Cook Inlet Tribal Council, which produced the game, and Alan Gershenfeld??, from the New York-based E-Line Media, which developed it, sat down with the UK edition of WIRED for an interview about the game.

Among the highlights are O'Neill's discussion about the challenges the project faced in incorporating and preserving Inupiat culture in a nuanced way in the novel medium of a video game, and E-Line's initial reluctance to take on the daunting task.

"Alan actually tried talking us out of it. Like, 'what are you trying to do with this? This is a really risky space, a messy space,'" O'Neill said. "But the more we talked, the more we realized there was something in putting our culture out there."
