Founder of The Foraker Group to step down

One of the founders of The Foraker Group, an Alaska nonprofit that works with and advises other nonprofits, will step down from his role as president and chief executive officer, according to a Friday announcement from the company.

Dennis McMillian started with The Foraker Group after decades with the United Way, where he served as a development officer and later the CEO for numerous communities across the country. In 1992, he arrived in Alaska to lead the United Way of Anchorage.

Nine years later, McMillian helped start The Foraker Group. Under his leadership, the nonprofit grew from a startup nonprofit to one with more than 380 current partners. Its mission to strengthen other nonprofits and make the sector more sustainable has remained, according to Steve Marshall, outgoing chair of the Foraker Governance Board.

Marshall said McMillian will remain in his current role until "we can get someone to attempt to step into his shoes." He expects the hiring process to take six to seven months.

According to the announcement, McMillian plans to remain in Alaska and continue to serve the nonprofit sector.

"He's one of the best," Marshall said.
