Richard, Molliet pace UAA skiers in New Mexico

Etienne Richard and Clement Molliet finished fifth and sixth in a 10-kilometer classic race Friday to lead the UAA ski team at the University of New Mexico Invitational.

Competition was held at Red River in both alpine and nordic skiing. The Seawolves landed five skiers in the top 15, all of them in the nordic races.

Richard placed fifth in 34 minutes, 18.4 seconds, finishing 2.5 seconds ahead of Molliet and more than a minute behind winner Rune Oedegaard of Colorado.

Alex Mahoney placed 11th for UAA (34:59.9) and Anchorage skier Forrest Mahlen was 12th for Montana State (35:07.1).

In the women's 10-K classic, Anchorage's Mackenzie Kanady racked up another top-10 finish by placing seventh in 41:41.3, well off the pace set by Utah's Veronika Mayerhoffer (38:10.7). UAA's Manon Locatelli was 12th in 42:19.1.

UAA's top slalom racers were Hughston Norton, 16th among the men, and Isabella Andreini, 17th among women.

Halfway through the two-day, eight-team meet, UAA is in fifth place in the team standings with 223 points. Colorado leads with 286.
