Iditarod Notebook: Jamaican musher Newton Marshall off the trail, but still an Iditarod presence

The "Mushin' Mon" Newton Marshall won't be on the Iditarod trail this year -- at least not on the back of sled runners.

Marshall, who gained notoriety with his Jamaican sled dog team, isn't racing this year after placing 43rd in 2014. Instead, Marshall is handling for mushers, including Jim Lanier and Karin Hendrickson, who had to withdraw from the race after a training accident in November.

But expect to see Marshall around as a race volunteer. Marshall was part of a crew of about 100 helping with food drops Wednesday, helping offload and weigh the bags before they are shipped out to checkpoints along the trail.

Marshall said he would be around, with plans to help at the Junior Iditarod, the race's ceremonial start and anywhere else he is needed.

Asked if he'd race again soon, he said he would if he could find the funding.

"I just need more money!" he said Wednesday.
