Coast Guard rescues stranded woman in Southeast Alaska

The Coast Guard reported the rescue of a 55-year-old woman Saturday who'd gone missing from a lodge at Gull Cove on Chichagof Island.

The lodge's operators became worried when the woman's dog returned to the lodge without her, according to the Coast Guard.

Gull Cove is 65 miles west of Juneau on the south shore of Icy Strait.

Alaska State Troopers called on the Coast Guard to launch an aerial search for the hiker, and Air Station Sitka deployed a Jayhawk helicopter crew.

Responders were preparing to return to the base for fuel when they spotted the woman on a shore and landed to pick her up, according to the Coast Guard.

She was able to walk, but hypothermic. The weather was reported as 36 degrees, 17 mile-per-hour winds and snow squalls.

"The hiker had little experience in the area and did not take survival or signal gear," said Lt. Mickey Sanders, command duty officer, Sector Juneau. "It's important for anyone heading out into the Alaskan wilderness to plan ahead, have a reliable form of communication, take appropriate gear and check the weather."

Sanders also said people venturing out into the woods should tell others about their plans.
