Flight in film

The Alaska Aviation Museum closes this season's lecture series with an exhibit of historic Alaska aviation photos. Speaker Rob Stapleton will provide a verbal guided tour of the courageous fliers and creatively rigged planes of yore, with an emphasis on Anchorage, the construction of Merrill Field in the 1930s and the use of the Park Strip as the town's airport in the 1920s. The lecture, supported in part by the Anchorage Centennial Celebration, starts at 6 p.m. Monday, May 18, and is free. (4721 Aircraft Drive)

Jazz

Samba into summer

The John Damberg Latin Jazz Sextet will present an evening of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban styles in a program that includes some rarely heard numbers by jazz giants and new music by Alaskan composers as well. The Latin sound blends marimba, steel drum, vibes, flute and classical guitar jamming over exotic World Beat percussion rhythms. Damberg will be joined by flute player Laura Koenig, guitarist Mark Manners, bass player Bob Andrews and percussionists Cameron Cartland and Clint Dallas. The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, in the UAA Fine Arts Building recital hall.

Woodworking

Greenwood turnings

Larry Kingry, who lives and works by Potter Marsh, has been working with wood for 45 years. He loves to follow the grain to find out where it will lead him. "The final form is out of my control," he says. Some of his latest work, vases and bowls are now on display at Northern Made Creations Gift Shop and Gallery in Huffman Square, 1120 Huffman Road. Called "k'ta'baqil'a," a Dena'ina word for bowl-like forms, these are made from mostly green wood, straight from the tree without previous processing, which means the shape can continue to change long after Kingry is done with the project.

Cabaret

'Sister Act' at Myrna's
