Floatplane flips over in Anchorage's Campbell Lake; no injuries reported

A floatplane flipped over in Campbell Lake on Friday afternoon but no one was injured, said an Anchorage Fire Department official.

AFD got a call from a home on North Shore Drive around 3:30 p.m. The caller reported that the blue and white floatplane "nosed over" into the lake, said spokesman John See. An AFD press release said the plane was a Piper PA-18.

"We haven't gotten any information about what caused it, like a gust of wind," See said. The AFD release said firefighters reported strong, gusty winds during the rescue operation.

The release said the two passengers were rescued by two private boats and both were unharmed.

Fire engines and an ambulance responded to the lake. A larger response was headed to the scene, but those units were called back when it was determined the occupants were OK, See said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident. On Friday night, an AFD spokesman said investigators and the owner of the plane were at the lake working to remove it.
