Ferry breakdown strands Alaska brew festival attendees

JUNEAU -- Hundreds of people attending an Alaska beer festival were stranded because of a broken down ferry.

The Alaska Marine Highway System ferry Taku suffered a mechanical problem Sunday during the annual Great Alaska Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival in Haines.

Juneau Empire reports that while many traveled by car from Canada, Interior Alaska and South-central Alaska, many arrived in Haines by ferry.

About 1,500 tickets were sold for the brew fest. Hundreds were stranded by the ferry's mechanical problem.

The newspaper reports attendees seemed to take the breakdown in stride, with people finding seats aboard the Fjordland or booking flights on Alaska Seaplanes, Wings and other air services.

A replacement ferry was to arrive early Monday.
