Arts Scene: The first hundred years of Anchorage, a decade at a time

History onstage

The first installment of "Anchorage: The First 100 Years -- A Theatrical Tour" will be presented at Cyrano's, 413 D St., this summer. Each week through Sept. 6 will present a different decade of the city's history as dramatized by local playwrights, called "curators" here. First up: the period from 1915-1925, with original newsreels and the story of how the town pitched in to make a feature-length film, "The Chechahcos." Showtimes are 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday-Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at centertix.net.

Loaves and fishes

Watercolor fish prints by Donna Beller will be on display this month at Great Harvest Bread Company, 570 E. Benson Blvd. Beller uses the Japanese technique called gyotaku, which makes a print right off the fish. The display will remain up through July 31.

Preservation picnic

If you're more interested in eating fish than looking at them, check out the food preservation classes being presented by the Anchorage District office of UAF's Cooperative Extension Service. The next class involves freezing and drying fruit from local berries and will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8. Upcoming classes include smoking and canning salmon, July 15, and pickles and sauerkraut, Aug. 19. Class size is limited and preregistration is required with payment, which ranges from $35-$40, either online at www.uaf.edu/ces/districts/anchorage on in person at the Anchorage office, 1675 C St. #110. Formline fusion

Ricky Tagaban's exhibit "Sexual Sovereignty" will be featured this month in the North Gallery at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art, 427 D St. Tagaban's work "compares sexual and weaving norms and taboos in Tlingit and mainstream culture." The South Gallery will exhibit contemporary Japanese folk art by Mieko Takamae, who will travel from Japan to attend the opening. Alanna DeRocchi will display ceramic sculpture in a show titled "On Migrating" in the Center Gallery. All shows open with a reception Friday evening.
