Stellar outing goes unrewarded for Pilots starter

Nick Meservey's gem went unpolished Wednesday night as the Anchorage Glacier Pilots pitcher gave up just one hit in nine innings but had to take a no decision in the Pilots' 1-0 nonleague loss to the Anchorage Bucs in 12 innings at Mulcahy Stadium.

Meservey, a 6-foot-4 lefty who will be a sophomore at Seattle University this fall, was perfect through eight innings before Zane Gurwitz singled to lead off the ninth. He struck out 12 Pilots and walked none before leaving in favor of Joe Wainhouse to start the 10th. Meservey hasn't given up a run in 14 innings this Alaska Baseball League season, striking out 15 and walking one. Gurwitz's hit was the first he's given up this summer.

Bucs starter Jeremy McDonald was no slouch himself, giving up five hits and striking out six in eight innings of work.

The Bucs broke up the scoreless deadlock with an unearned run in the 12th inning when Grant Palmer came home from second after a single off Pilots reliever Jesse Stallings and an error by Pilots center fielder Joe Moroney.

Wainhouse took the loss, while Jim Voyles pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win.

The victory salvaged the final game of the three-game Mayor's Cup series for the Bucs, who dropped the first two contests at Mulcahy.

Miners 5, Chinooks 1

The red-hot Mat-Su Miners continued their tear through the Alaska Baseball League with a 5-1 win over Chugiak-Eagle River on Wednesday at the Loretta French Sports Complex.

The Miners improved to a league-best 13-4, remaining the only team in the league above .500.

Panners 7, Oilers 6

The Alaska Goldpanners earned a 7-6 win over the Peninsula Oilers on Wednesday in Fairbanks.

The Goldpanners used a five-run seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, then withstood four Oilers runs in the final two innings to hold on.

Fairbanks improved to 4-7 while the Oilers dropped to 6-7.
