Pilot makes emergency landing on mud flats north of Anchorage

A pilot walked away uninjured from an emergency landing near the Birchwood Airport north of Anchorage on Sunday afternoon after his float plane lost power, the National Transportation Safety Board reported.

The pilot had been out flightseeing on a Cessna 180 float plane, "bouncing around" to different lakes, said Millicent Hoidal, aviation accident investigator with the NTSB's Alaska Region.

He was heading from Katie Lake in the Matanuska Valley to the area of Fire lakes in Eagle River, when the plane lost power around 2:45 p.m., Hoidal said.

He made an emergency landing, touching down on the mudflats southwest of the Birchwood Airport, said Hoidal.

The pilot was the sole person aboard the aircraft and was uninjured, Hoidal said.

He was reportedly walking out of the woods around 3 p.m. Sunday, an officer said over the Anchorage police scanner.

The emergency landing was at least the second this weekend, after a pilot landed on the Seward Highway Saturday. In that instance too, no injuries were reported.
