Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly to vote on tobacco tax

KETCHIKAN -- The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly will yet again be voting on a tobacco tax.

The Ketchikan Daily News reports the Assembly is set to vote Monday on a $3-per-pack tax on cigarettes and a 75-percent wholesale tax on other tobacco products including e-cigarettes.

At the Assembly's last meeting in June, the tax failed to pass when two Assembly members were absent. Now the full Assembly has a chance to discuss the tax, which is estimated to bring in more than $1 million for the borough and the city.

The City Council has already indicated it would pursue a tobacco tax on its own if the Assembly doesn't approve the motion.

If the tax is approved, Ketchikan would be equal with Juneau for the highest per-pack tax on cigarettes.
