Girl dies after falling into Manokotak sewage lagoon

A 5-year-old girl died after she fell into a sewage lagoon late Monday in the Southwest Alaska village of Manokotak, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers identified the girl as Daphne Mochin. Troopers say Mochin and two of her friends crawled under a fence that surrounds the sewage lagoon.

Mochin reportedly fell into the lagoon around 11 p.m. Monday. A villager pulled Mochin out and performed CPR, successfully reviving her, according to troopers.

Daphne was medevaced to the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, where her "condition again worsened and she eventually succumbed to the effects of the drowning and died," troopers said.

Troopers said the State Medical Examiner's Office was notified of the death. Troopers are continuing to investigate, they said.
