Anchorage police still searching for suspect in Thursday shooting

The Anchorage Police Department said late Friday afternoon that it canceled an arrest warrant for an 18-year-old whom it had previously named as a suspect in a Thursday shooting.

Dewayne Wilson no longer faces the charges listed on the warrant, including assault and weapons misconduct, said APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

"New information came to light, and the warrant was quashed," Oistad said.

The investigation continues into the Thursday evening shooting that shut down several streets in the Jewel Lake area, police said.

Police are still searching for the person who shot Benjamin Sherbahn after being confronted about a stolen four-wheeler.

Early Thursday morning, four four-wheelers were stolen from a company owned by Sherbahn.

Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, a friend alerted Sherbahn that someone was seen in the area of 88th Avenue and Blackberry Street who may have been riding one of the stolen vehicles. Sherbahn rode to the area on a dirt bike and caught up to the person who was riding the stolen four-wheeler, Oistad wrote in an earlier news release.

"Words were exchanged, and once (the suspect) realized he was being confronted by the owner of the stolen four-wheeler he was riding, he pulled a gun and fired several shots," Oistad wrote.

The suspect left on foot and police were called at 4:41 p.m. Sherbahn was taken to a hospital with a single non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his thigh, Oistad wrote.

Police searched for the shooter Thursday night, blocking off streets in the 3500 block of West 79th Avenue and setting up a perimeter for a dog search. The trail went cold, though, Oistad told reporters. "The K-9 didn't pick up anything, so who knows where he went," Oistad said.

Wilson was identified by a citizen who saw the reports about the shooting, Oistad said earlier on Friday.
