No foul play suspected as man's body recovered from Matanuska River

Officials have recovered the body of a 22-year-old man they say drove into the Matanuska River Saturday, the Palmer Police Department reported.

According to an email Sunday morning from Palmer Police Chief Lance Ketterling, the body of Zachary T. Terry was recovered from the vehicle, which had been estimated to be sitting 8 feet deep in the silty river, at about 9:45 a.m.

Matanuska-Susitna Borough fire, police and emergency crews and the water rescue team responded shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday to a report that someone had driven a car over an embankment and into the river north of Sherrod Elementary School in Palmer.

Ketterling said Sunday no foul play is suspected in Terry's death.

"Based on witness statements and other evidence found in the course of the investigation it appears to be a suicide, but the investigation is still ongoing," Ketterling wrote.

Ketterling thanked the Alaska State Troopers, borough responders, Denali Towing and Recovery and underwater mapping company TerraSond.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Terry in this difficult time," Ketterling wrote.
