Valley of the Moon shooting suspect still at large

Anchorage police were still seeking a gunman Monday evening who reportedly shot a man in the torso when the victim answered the door of his Valley of the Moon home Sunday afternoon.

The 23-year-old gunshot victim was in "critical but stable condition" Monday evening, Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Castro said.

Police had not yet been able to interview the victim, and still did not know if the suspect and victim knew each other or were strangers, she said.

No suspect was in custody Monday evening, Castro said.

The shooting happened at 2:42 p.m. Sunday on the 600 block of West 20th Avenue, a few blocks south from Valley of the Moon Park.

Witnesses told police that the 23-year-old "opened the door of his home to a gunman who fired a single shot" and then ran away.

The suspect is described as a white male with short, dark hair, between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches, tall.

The gunman was seen fleeing in the direction of Blueberry Street and 21st Avenue, police reported. Officers carrying rifles and guiding canine units searched the area Sunday.

Detectives continued to follow up Monday, Castro said, but police had stopped searching the area.
