Three teens in Kotzebue face 2nd-degree murder charges

Kotzebue police say three teenagers have been arrested on murder charges in relation to a shooting death on Friday.

Police said that Brandon M. Nelson, 17; Tony Jackson, 18; and Frank J. Jackson Jr., 19, made initial court appearances Monday at the Kotzebue courthouse on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and tampering with physical evidence.

"Due to Nelson's age, he was automatically waived to adult status due to the seriousness of the alleged criminal offenses" in accordance with state law, according to a Kotzebue Police Department press release.

Police in the Western Alaska community reported Friday that at 1:18 a.m. that morning, they got a call about a person shot on the 500 block of Second Avenue.

"When police and paramedics responded to the scene, they found the victim," identified as 27-year-old Joshua Floyd Sours III, police said. Sours was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, they said.
