Minor earthquake strikes near Valdez

A minor earthquake shook parts of Southcentral Alaska Sunday afternoon as Alaskans settled in for the second half of the Super Bowl.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the 4.0 temblor struck 29 miles north of Valdez at 4:42 p.m., at a depth of 11.4 miles.

The quake was shallower but much weaker than the 7.1 quake that rattled the region two weeks ago, causing fires fueled by ruptured natural gas lines in Kenai and dumping the contents of store shelves to floors. No injuries were reported in that Jan. 24 quake.
