Alaskans still in hunt for NCAA D-III crown

With women's college hockey wrapped for the season -- Anchorage freshman forward Mackenzie Millen won an NCAA Division III title with Plattsburgh -- the men's tournaments still are to be contested, and Anchorage has some players in the mix at the D-III level, which is down to the last four teams.

Senior forward Erik Cooper of Anchorage not only captains St. Norbert (24-3-2) but is the Green Knights' leading scorer and top assist man (12-21--32 in 29 games. He was on the 2014 St. Norbert team that hoisted hardware. He's joined by teammate Tyler Andrews, a freshman defenseman from Anchorage who owns 0-8--8 totals in 25 games. St. Norbert on Friday plays UMass-Boston (23-4-3) in a semifinal in Lake Placid, N.Y. Freshman defenseman John Regnart of Anchorage has played two games for Boston.

The other semi Friday pits Wisconsin-Stevens Point (22-5-2) against Geneseo (20-4-6), and Stevens Point includes junior defenseman Trace Strahle of Anchorage, who owns 2-10--12 totals in 29 games. Strahle and the Pointers have been the national runners-up the last two seasons, losing last season in the final to Trinity (and the Cole brothers, Ryan and Brandon, of Anchorage) and two seasons ago losing in the final to Cooper and St. Norbert.

The 16-team Division I tournament also opens Friday at regional sites. Sophomore defenseman Truman Reed of Anchorage is listed on the roster of defending champion Providence but has yet to play a game for the Friars.
