Woman found dead on Anchorage Hillside

The discovery of a woman's body near the end of Goldenview Drive on the Anchorage Hillside over the weekend has prompted police to ask the public for help as they investigate how she may have died.

Police said in a statement Tuesday that a passerby flagged down an officer at about 10:15 a.m. Saturday after spotting the remains of Darlene Kunayak, 45, near where Goldenview turns into Bulgaria Drive.

The Anchorage Police Department's crime-scene team responded to the area, and Kunayak's body was taken to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy.

"Additional information will be released following the autopsy as it becomes available," police wrote.

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell said Tuesday that there wasn't any word on whether foul play was a factor in Kunayak's death.

"It's just a death investigation at this point -- we're not deeming it as a homicide," Shell said. "At this point in time we don't know what the cause of death is."

Shell didn't have word on when or where Kunayak had last been seen alive, but investigators believe she arrived in the Goldenview area shortly before she died.

"What they believe is that she had somehow gotten up there that evening, so she hadn't been there for very long," Shell said.

Police are asking anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area or has surveillance footage of road traffic Friday night or Saturday morning to call APD Detective James Estes at 907-786-8572.
