Nunaka Valley girls win Little League Softball World Championships

The Anchorage Daily News reports that the Nunaka Valley girls all-stars approached this Little League Junior Softball World Series with an unusual team mantra: Unfinished business. Last year, the team placed fifth in the competition, and they knew they could do better.

On Saturday in Kirkland, Wash., the Nunaka Valley girls tied up last year's loose ends by defeating British Columbia 6-2 to win the world championships in the 12 to 14 year olds bracket. British Columbia had made three consecutive World Series appearances.

First baseman Morgan Hill told the Anchorage Daily News it was the "best feeling in the world."

Nunaka Valley had an amazing season, losing only 2 of 18 games. They lost once to Juneau in the best-of-5 state title series, and once during the World Series, to Puetro Rico. But each time they have rebounded from the loses, bringing home win after win, including one run of four straight wins in the West Region championships.

Pitcher Lauren Syrup told the Anchorage Daily News that she couldn't "even put it in words."

The girls received a plague and a banner, and will keep their World Series jerseys. Also, more than likely waiting for them in Anchorage is a three-foot trophy from Continental Motors owner Marten Martensen, which he gives the Nunaka Valley girls every time a team makes it to the World Series.

The Little League Junior Softball World Series has a blog in which they congratulate both final teams.
