Young Alaskan Artist Award concert
Oboist Remy Libbrecht is the winner of this year’s Anchorage Festival of Music’s 2019 Ted Stevens Young Alaskan Artist award. A recent graduate of the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music (and Anchorage’s Steller High School before that), he’ll perform works by Francis Poulenc, Eugène Bozza, Antal Doráti and Antonio Vivaldi. Weed Smackdown
Get diry and help rid Valley of the Moon of European bird cherry trees, an invasive plant that degrades moose and salmon habitat. Removing the plants helps native plants and healthy habitats to come back. Tools are supplied, but bring gloves if you have them. Expect fun, with prizes, a T-shirt and free lunch. Galway Days Irish Festival
See some of Alaska’s most popular Irish and Irish American performers, including The Irish Dance Academy of Alaska, The Derry Aires, Crooked Road, Rogues and Wenches, Rebecca Wolverton, the Midnight Sun Cloggers, Linda Yarborough and many more. There will also be vendors situated in the foyer and hallways leading to classrooms where workshops will be held on topics such as Irish History, Irish Literature, Harp Technique, Ceili Dancing, Singing in Irish for Children and more. Sublime with Rome
A collaboration between Eric Wilson, formerly of the ska punk band Sublime, and singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez, this group chiefly performs songs by the original Sublime, which was fronted by Bradley Nowell until his death in 1996. Queen Nation
This nationally touring show brings a live, 90-minute production of Queen’s greatest hits that preserves the image, sound and stage persona of vintage Queen. Special guests Boogie Shoes will be opening the show. There will be a beer garden and food trucks. For all ages (children 5 and under get in free). Tickets $36 at brownpapertickets. Augtoberfest in Healy
It’s the perfect time of year for an Alaska roadtrip, and the Augtoberfest in Healy might well be the perfect destination this weekend. The annual festival at 49th State will have two days of music: Medium Build, Sun Dog, and DJ Mancat on day one, and Blackwater Railroad, Alaska Blaskapelle and DJ Mancat on day two.
