December First Friday: Anchorage artists spotlight

Here's the short list of Anchorage First Friday events set for Dec. 7 around town.

Anchorage Museum

The museum will be open to First Friday views from 6 to 9 p.m. General admission is free and the exhibition "Worldland of Toys" is sure to jump start your holiday cheer, should you need it. Read more for a list of exhibitions and other museum related information.

Downtown

International gallery of Contemporary Art (427 D. St): First Friday at IGCA will begin at 5:30. IGCA will host two shows. The first, "Collect/Art," features 15 artist with many pieces priced under $250 and the second, "Process Alaska," is another group show curated by locals Michael Conti & Richard Cutrona of Good Question Galle.

Feathers Boutique and Vintage Consignment (417 D Street) Alexandra Phillips will showcase her travel photography, uniquely printed on tiny canvases, along with hand made fashions and vintage adult "souvenirs."

Octopus Ink Gallery (410 G. St.) will host Elizabeth O'Donnell's "Above and Below."

Alaska Native Arts Foundation (500 W. 6th Ave) will hold a reception for Alutilq artist Tanya Lukin Linklater's recent work from 5 to 8 p.m.

If you're feeling the need for something a little different, head to Snow City Cafe (1034 W. 4th Ave.) and check out, "Painted, Powdered & Tattooed" a show by Laura Yaskell celebrating the modern tattooed woman. SJ Stevens's new project SJ & Drums will provide the ambiance. Reception begins at 5:30 and goes until 8 p.m.

If you're feeling more like film, the Alaska Experience Theater (333 W. 4th Ave) will be screening movies from 3 pm to 10:30 pm as part of the Anchorage International Film Festival. Films include the feature "Shouting Secrets," the Snowdance movie" "Little Red Book," documentary "Wolves Unleashed," A collection of super short films, a movie on Yerts and the feature "Redlegs."

The Alaska Humanities Forum (161 East 1st Avenue, Door 15) will host Indra Arriaga's "Murmurs." An opening reception with light refreshments will begin at 5:30 with an artist talk beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Elsewhere in Anchorage

The University of Alaska Anchorage's Student Union Gallery (3211 Providence Dr., room 218) will show "Birds in Art," an exhibit of contemporary artistic interpretations of birds from North America in two- and three-dimensional media.

Alaska Pacific University, in the Conoco Phillips gallery, presents the Alaska Photographic Center Jurors Choice exhibition.

At Middle Way Cafe (1300 W. Northern Lights Blvd.) Lance Lekander's solo show, "Arbitrary Explorations," will open and runs through Dec. 12.

If you feel like a crowd, photography by Rhae Anne will adorn the walls at Tap Root while Hawkins Wright and the Meg Mackey Band serenade the room. Photography anytime, singer songwriters at 9 p.m. Come with cash to pay the $7 cover.
