Matthew Anderson was born and raised in Anchorage and began studying percussion at a young age, working under the tutelage of John Damberg. He continued playing jazz and in symphonies in high school and also played in his own rock group.

Anderson has operated as the principal timpanist for the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra and is a music teacher at Northern Lights ABC.
