The Supreme Court recently ruled that Netherlands oil giant Royal Dutch Shell could not be sued in U.S. courts for human rights abuses committed on foreign soil, despite its U.S. subsidiary companies. But Exxon Mobil is headquartered in Texas, and Indonesians claim the oil major bears responsibility in cases of kidnap, torture, rape and murder committed by the Indonesian military, which Exxon has paid to protect its natural gas assets there.
