Anchorage retailer Skinny Raven Sports will close its boutique shoe store, Her Tern, at the end of July.

Just across Eighth Avenue from Skinny Raven's downtown location, Her Tern is the running store's more stylish and upscale counterpart, boasting pairs of designer shoes that range from around $75 to several hundreds of dollars. It has been open since 2005.

Neil Lamothe, the new president of Skinny Raven, said the shop will close July 31 because its product line doesn't fit in with the company's vision for the future.

We’re just choosing to focus on our core strength right now,” he said. “Our core strength is our running and walking community. We want to do what we do best.”

Lamothe wouldn't comment on how business has been going at Her Tern lately. After the shop closes, he said, the business will decide what to do with the space at 811 W. Eighth Ave.

Her Tern's closure will follow other recent retail closures in downtown Anchorage: ShuzyQ, another shoe store, said in February it would close its downtown location, and menswear shop The Mercantile shut its doors earlier this year.
