Anchorage police have arrested a 20-year-old woman charged with hitting an 18-year-old man while driving her Chrysler PT Cruiser and fleeing in the early morning hours July 20.
The collision injured Tevin George, who was walking on Huffman Road with a friend, knocking George unconscious, police said. George's friend described the suspect's car as a dark sedan, but officers found parts of a black 2006 PT Cruiser, police spokeswoman Dani Myren said. And a tipster who noticed the damaged PT Cruiser elsewhere in Anchorage called police Thursday, Myren said.
"In following up on that tip, they were able to identify this black PT Cruiser with front end damage," Myren said.
Myren said that information led them to Kayla Johnson, now facing charges of assault, drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render aid and driving with a revoked license. Officers arrested Johnson Friday afternoon, and she was held on $75,000 bail, Myren said.
"There was information that was obtained during the course of the investigation that she was intoxicated at the time of the accident. There was some witness information," Myren said.
Police at the time described George's injuries as severe. He was unconscious, unresponsive and had suffered a serious head injury, Myren said.
George's father, Michael Oustigoff, said Friday his son was still recovering, slowly.
"He's not going to be out of the hospital for quite some time," Oustigoff said. "There's not a day that goes by that we don't see some sort of improvement out of him."
George is not able to carry a conversation yet and is communicating, in part, by squeezing his parents' hands, Oustigoff said.
Still, Oustigoff said he did not want people to "hate-bash" Johnson.
"Because she's going through a lot, and her life is changing, as well as our son's. We don't want everybody to hate her. We'll deal with this lady when we go to court," Oustigoff said.
Court records show that Johnson was charged with careless driving in 2011. The charge was later dismissed.
In February of this year, Johnson was charged with repeat underage drinking. She failed to show up for a court hearing in April and briefly had a warrant for her arrest, according to the court records. Johnson pleaded guilty in May.
