Man convicted of attempted murder for shooting at Anchorage police officer

A 28-year-old man was convicted Thursday of the attempted murder on an Anchorage police officer after a three-week trial.

The Anchorage District Attorney's Office said that Aaron Sullivan was also convicted of felony weapons charges.

In September 2014, Sullivan was evading police in his car and shot at an officer who pulled him over on a warrant issued for a probation violation, police said at that time.

"As the officer got out of his police car, Sullivan responded by firing three shots at the officer from his .44 magnum revolver. The officer returned fire, but Sullivan was able to get away," the district attorney's office said.

Police found syringes and a revolver with three spent shell casings in Sullivan's abandoned car, according to charging documents. They spotted and arrested Sullivan the next day.

Sullivan told police he'd been on a days-long heroin and methamphetamine binge, and he did not want to go back to jail, prosecutors said. He now faces up to 99 years in prison.

Sentencing is set for July 1.
