Suspect sought in fatal shooting outside Fairbanks bar

Fairbanks police are looking for several men in connection with the shooting death of a man outside of a bar in the Interior Alaska city Sunday morning.

According to a release from the Fairbanks Police Department, 23-year-old John D. Kavairlook Jr. was shot and killed in a parking lot by the Rock n Rodeo bar along the Steese Highway around 2:30 a.m., in an incident that apparently began with Kavairlook and another man fighting inside the bar.

After being escorted from the bar by security, Kavairlook and the other man continued their altercation in the parking lot, and three additional men joined in the fight, police said. "Multiple shots" were fired in the incident, striking Kavairlook numerous times. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police said they believe all four of the other men involved in the incident left in the same vehicle.

Investigators were attempting to gather video evidence, and asked anyone with information about the shooting or the men involved in the fight to contact them. They are also looking for information about the man who they say fought with Kavairlook inside the bar, who is described as a black male with short hair, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing between 200 and 230 pounds.

"He was wearing all dark clothing and one of his black shoes came off during the fight, but he retrieved it after the fight was over," police said.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call Detective Alana Malloy at 907-450-6557.
