What's up this weekend? Color Run, Highland Games, kids fishing for kings, Pride

Scottish Highland Games

Ten top highland athletes are traveling from around the world to the Alaska State Fair grounds this weekend, where they will compete for the title of world champion as part of the annual Scottish Highland Games festival.

In addition to demonstrations of strength, speed and overall burliness, there will be other activities: scotch tasting, dancing, tug-of-war, a tall tales competition and, of course, drumming and piping. 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, Alaska State Fair grounds in Palmer. Admission for adults is $20 Saturday, $15 Sunday, or $30 for a two-day pass. Youth (ages 5-16) are $5. See the full schedule at on.adn.com/28Z6mw2. (highlandgames@alaskascottish.org)

Kids fish for kings

Campbell Creek belongs to the kids this weekend.

A youth-only fishery for king salmon is set for 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the section Anchorage stream that runs between Dimond Boulevard and the Old Seward Highway.

Kids 15 and younger will have that creek section to themselves for king fishing. Adults can assist their children in landing fish, but the section will be closed to all fishing, including catch-and-release, for anyone 16 years of age or older.

Youths don't need a sportfishing license or king stamp, but they do need a free Harvest Record Card, available anywhere licenses are sold, so they can immediately record the harvest of any king salmon 20 inches or longer. Bait is allowed.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game staff and volunteers will be at the Taku-Campbell Lake parking lot off 76th Avenue and King Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to help young anglers.

Pride parade and festival

Anchorage Pridefest kicks into full gear this week, with the big festival and parade on Saturday.

Young people and families are invited to help carry a 50-foot Pride flag through downtown Anchorage. To join them, meet at the corner of Ninth Avenue and E Street at 10 a.m. sharp. They'll join the main parade at 11 a.m., which will include decorated floats and a processional. The parade starts at Ninth Avenue and E street, loops through downtown and ends back at the Delaney Park Strip, where the Pride festival will start at noon and run till 5 p.m.

At the festival, check out 120 vendors, two stages of entertainment (acts include the Underground Dance Co. and folk-rock band Blackwater Railroad Co.) and food, with prize drawings at 3 p.m. For a complete rundown of events this weekend, check out alaskapride.org.

Color Run 5-K

More than 5,000 runners are signed up to work up a sweat in a 5K race Saturday, but they'll smell sweet at the finish line.

The Color Run returns to Anchorage with the Tropicolor World Tour. The 3.1-mile course features a section called the "Tropicolor Zone" that will bathe runners in tropical colors and scents.

The race begins at 9 a.m. at Sullivan Arena. Runners will be released every few minutes in phases.

Entry fee is $39. Participants can sign up in advance at thecolorrun.com or they can sign up the day of the race at Sullivan Arena from 7-9 a.m. Race-packet pickup is also from 7-9 a.m. at Sullivan.
