Allen Moore and Brent Sass were racing neck-and-neck through the night Saturday as they approached the final checkpoint in the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

Once they reached Braeburn, the mushers must take an eight-hour layover before making the final push to the finish line, which this year ins at Takhini Hot Springs, north of Whitehorse.

The 1,000-mile race should end sometime Sunday night.

Earlier Saturday, Moore was the first to reach the Carmacks checkpoint, arriving at 11:43 a.m. AST, more than an hour ahead of Sass, who pulled in at 1:13 p.m. Sass seized the lead by spending only 20 minutes at the checkpoint. Moore, the defending champion, didn't leave until 3:30 p.m.
