Photos: UAA v. Bemidji State hockey

While UAA's piercing 6-3 loss to Bemidji State on Friday night didn't invalidate all the Seawolves accomplished in the first half of the hockey season, it served as a fresh, harsh reminder the holidays are over and it's time to clock in again.

Some rink rust is expected from a team coming off a four-week break, as the Seawolves were. Yet their shortcomings were abundant against the Beavers, who had played two post-Christmas games — a win and tie against UAF in Fairbanks — and supplemented that rust-busting experience with relentless work ethic at Sullivan Arena.

Bemidji State administered a special-teams beat-down in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association game. The Beavers converted two of three power-play chances and added a short-handed strike. The Seawolves, meanwhile, came up empty on five power plays, including an extended two-man advantage late in the first period, and faced a Beavers penalty-killing crew that checks in third nationally by wiping out 89.2 percent of opposing power plays.
