The Postcards of Hope exhibition opened this week at Pacific Northern Academy. The display features postcards created for the academy by Syrian and Iraqi children living in a refugee camp in Lebanon. The cards were brought back to Alaska by fifth-grade schoolmate William Scannell as part of the Any Refugee effort initiated by him last fall. Last October, students prepared cards with messages of hope for displaced Middle East children. Scannell, who has studied Arabic for several years, traveled to Lebanon over spring break to deliver the cards. The cards delivered in return are displayed in the show at the South Anchorage school. The students are now creating more cards to eventually deliver to other refugee children.
