David Letterman spoils 'The Dark Night Rises': Batman fans furious

Social media users reacted with fury after David Letterman apparently spoiled a key plot twist in the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."

According to Australia's Fairfax media, one Twitter user threatened: "I'm going to kill David Letterman if it's the last thing I do."

Another tweeted: "Thank you David Letterman, you son of a bitch."

And @dirtytea posted simply: "Avoid David Letterman interview with Anne Hathaway, he spoils the ending."

Fans also left angry posts on the Letterman Facebook page, with one branding him a "prize asshole" and another suggesting it was about time he retired.

A person commenting under the name Mad Hatter 1 on the Huffington Post wrote: "Dave has 'OLD TIMERS' disease. It happens to everyone."

Letterman was interviewing Hathaway, who plays Catwoman in "Dark Knight" — out next Friday in the US — when he said: "I saw this movie, the Batman movie ... and in the end ..."

He then reportedly revealed the key plot development.

An evidently shocked Hathaway responded by saying, "The wrath you have just invited onto yourself!"

She also looked into the camera and, addressing director Christopher Nolan, said: "Chris, I had no part in it, I'm sorry."

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that it was unlikely Letterman's comments would do significant damage to the Batman finale's box office takings.

"If [comic book baddie] Bane really does [do what Letterman revealed], Warner Bros. may want to do the same to David Letterman," it said.

But it concluded: "With The Dark Knight Rises tracking north of $160-million for its opening weekend, there's little chance Letterman's statements could hurt its box office."

Several media outlets speculated about whether Letterman's spoiler was genuine.
