It's nice to have a local paper, but here's a suggestion or two

Congratulations to our new publisher. For us old-timers it's nice to have a local paper in hand for Alaska news and community information. It's also good to have the sports pages, even though it's a small representation of all the daily sports events, but good to have and have it every day (except Saturday).

Suggestion: Move the obituaries page. I hate to read a story on the front page and have the obituaries on following page. What is that? Secondly, why not print more stories from Fairbanks and Juneau newspapers? Maybe Southcentral papers. The Frontiersman has great stories. Is there a publication on the Slope?

The ADN spends a huge amount of ink printing stories from New York and Washington newspapers (D.C., not state), but most of us have the internet and we can read their stories everywhere online.

Human trafficking a problem Anchorage must be aware of

People need to know that human trafficking is a big problem in Anchorage.

Studies have shown that at least 1 in 4 homeless teens report being victims of human trafficking. As a youth myself, I was unaware that this was even a problem at all in Alaska before I started a book project in my English class. I recently have been talking to my friends and teachers about the subject and have come to realize that this horrible crime is widely unrecognized in my community. This can be a big problem considering human traffickers often target kids my age, whom, I have come to realize, do not even know this is a danger they should be aware of in our city.

This is why I am writing to you. There are so many organizations in Anchorage who support victims of human trafficking. For example, the Barefoot Mile Walk was hosted in May by a national organization that helps raise funds to support victims all over the country. Here in Anchorage, the proceeds went to the Covenant House, My House, and Priceless Alaska, all of whom use the funds to help save and support victims of human trafficking or just homeless people in general, which also helps with the problem of human trafficking.

I hope I have at least enlightened one person in our city who will go out into the community and do something to help because every person counts. I know I sure will.

President Trump, what is the US military doing in Niger?

Mr. President, aside from four dead military members killed in Niger, what are we doing in Niger? We're definitely not golfing at a private course with Sen. Graham. Hmmmmmm? Maybe talk with the military families to hear how things are going for them with their losses. Oh, I forgot Mr. President, you avoided the draft during Vietnam. You had more important things to do. Maybe stand quietly and hold your hand over your heart.
