Letter: Thanks from Seldovia for a kind gesture

I'd like to thank a wonderful young man for making an elderly lady very happy. Nicholas Raffuse and his father, Jim, were fishing onshore in Seldovia and noticed some gold shining in the rocky sand. They dug it out and cleaned it off. It was a gold locket.

A name was engraved on the back and they thought it might belong to a local so they stopped in the gift shop, Thyme on the Boardwalk, and asked owner Susie Stranik if she knew who "Cecile M. Jones" was. She didn't, but referred them to Laurel Hilts at Seldovia Village Tribe. Laurel is the marketing and public relations director and administrator of Seldovia Chatter Box, our local online bulletin board.

Laurel took pictures and posted asking to whom it may belong. I saw it and immediately responded that it was my mother's lost locket. I was able to meet up with Nicholas to get the locket, which I hope to get restored.

The Raffuse family own and operate Anchorage House of Hobbies on Spenard Road. While spending time with Nicholas, I realized what a wonderful job his mother and father had done rearing this man to care about resolving something so small to make another person so happy. A day or so later, I caught up with Jim at his boat and met him and Brent from Unalakleet. We had a nice chat and they shared halibut with me.

So, that is how Seldovia is. We love our fishermen and we love the tourists who visit. Thank you for a venue to show appreciation for one human's kindness to another.
