Letter: What’s the point of Drag Queen Story Time? Raising good Americans.

In the letters to the editor on Sunday, June 17, M.J. Kosovich asked, "What is the point of Drag Queen Story Time?" As the father of one of the children who attended, let me try to provide an answer. I believe that all Americans have the right to live however they like, as long as it does not harm anyone else. For too much of our history, we have not lived up to the idea that all "men" are created equal. There have always been "those people" who it was OK to belittle, to treat socially and legally as second-class citizens. For many people in the mainstream, this practice has worked out fine, but it has ruined lives and done much damage to the most vulnerable in our society.

Kosovich asked why a parent would take their child to be with drag queens instead of an elderly veteran or a grandparent. To which I reply, "Why is this an either-or situation?" I take my son to meet veterans, police officers, firefighters, as well as soldiers and he loves to spend time with his grandparents. But it is important to acknowledge that all those groups can and do include transgender people.

So, what is the point of taking my child to listen to drag queen story time? To teach him that there are many was to be a person and a good American and that no one should be a second-class citizen because they are somehow different. Besides, he wanted to wear his leopard costume to the library.
