Letters to the Editor

Letter: America is about inclusion, not uniformity

A previously published letter to the editor said Bibles and prayer need to be re-implemented into schools in order to solve the problem of moral inadequacy in our country. However, when a public school values a certain religion over another, it is implying that this is the religion you should believe.

The Anchorage School District is extremely diverse, and many faiths are practiced within it. Many of these faiths value compassion, humility and the will to work towards something that is larger than yourself. This is what needs to be encouraged rather than one religion over another.

Even if students have the option to not participate, it constantly tells those who aren't Christian that their religion isn't important enough to be recognized. Each person should be looked upon as a person with the same rights as any other. Placing a single religion within a public school system dismantles individual religious choice.

We must understand that Bibles were taken out of public schools in 1962, and to place them back is not only a step in the wrong direction, but also further enforces the idea that there should be lack of diversity in our society.
