Letter: Trump is damaging U.S. interests

My father's generation fought in World War II to defeat totalitarianism. The alliances created between free European nations and the United States after that war continue to promote open democracy, strengthen countries on both sides of the Atlantic and protect liberty and free elections.

Those alliances and the values they represent are now threatened as never before by Vladimir Putin and, astonishingly, our own president. President Donald Trump gives little indication he will cease his fawning attitude toward Russia.

Normally, a responsible Congress would provide a check to this dangerous behavior, but Republicans seem content to allow Putin and Trump to continue their attacks. Many Americans, including prominent conservatives, have therefore concluded that if we care for America's strength, freedom and leadership, then we have no choice but to vote for and hope for a Democratic Congress this November.
