Before all the craziness of the upcoming election begins, let's get a few things straight.
Some time back, a group of the best minds in Alaska were gathered to help solve our state's budget problems. They recommended a reduction in spending and a state income tax. In that way, all users of state resources would share the equally in their cost and generate millions of dollars in additional revenue.
Yet the Republican-led Senate blocked every effort to implement a state income tax. This forced Gov. Bill Walker to call them back several times, costing us millions of dollars, in an effort to solve our budget shortfalls.
The Republicans called for more budget cuts; you are seeing the results of those cuts today. Crime is up, services are down.
With nowhere else to turn, Gov. Walker was forced to use our PFD to help pull the state out of our growing deficit. If we don't impose a state income tax, we Alaskans can look forward to more attacks on our PFD.
It is only fair that these folks living outside the state pay for using our resources. Yes, we independent voters, the largest voter block, can decide our future. Lead, follow or get out of the way; your vote will be very important!
As for me, I am for Walker and Mallott.
