Letters to the Editor

Letter: Sign of the times

Unfortunately, as has been the case with many others, my house was recently broken into. As someone was home, the intruder was quickly apprehended. What’s sad about the situation is that the person who broke in was only 21 and had been in court earlier that day for sentencing on prior felony and misdemeanor charges.

At arraignment the next day, the defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced. What’s worse about the case is that the judge gave the defendant a 10-day sentence with only one day to serve. In talking with the Anchorage district attorney, they had recommended a 30-day sentence.

Breaking and entering with prior felony and misdemeanor convictions should not result in one day in jail. There is something wrong with this picture.
