Letter: A call for dignity and decency

I recently attended a naturalization ceremony for new American citizens held at the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Wendy Williamson Auditorium. The ceremony was profoundly moving and inspirational. If you’ve never attended one, you should. Nothing is a better reminder of all that is good about our country than the joy of new citizens

Among the speakers was Sen. Dan Sullivan. He and others spoke eloquently about the common immigrant experience across generations, about how the greatness of our country derives fundamentally from the constitution and the rule of law, and about our rights and responsibilities as Americans under the Constitution.

In his critically important position as a U.S. senator, I urge Sen. Sullivan to speak out consistently and strongly against any words or actions, by any of our leaders, that undermine the rule of law, freedom of the press, freedom of religion or any of the constitutional rights on which our nation is founded. And I urge him to call consistently and strongly for all those whom we entrust to lead and represent us to always speak and act with the same dignity and demeanor which he showed at the ceremony.
